What is Discipleship?

Catholic discipleship is a committed approach to living a Christian life within the Catholic Church. The term is generally applied to Catholics who sincerely strive to live according to the instructions provided by Jesus in the New Testament. The U.S. Catholic bishops have described disciples as those who “make a conscious, firm decision, carried out in action, to be followers of Jesus Christ no matter the cost to themselves.”

A conscious choice refers to doing everything in our lives with a sense of purpose to fulfill the will of God. Catholics who demonstrate discipleship do so in all aspects of their spiritual life. Fasting and Prayer, including Mass, is done with a distinct sense of purpose.

In order to act as a Catholic disciple, one must also do good works for those in need. Catholics who practice the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy are following the example of Jesus told to us in the New Testament.

Being a disciple also includes a willingness to make personal sacrifices in pursing the Christian life. The Gospel of Luke tells us, “So, therefore, whoever of you does not renounce all that he has cannot be my disciple.” (Luke 14:33).

Finally, a Catholic disciple is willing to use his/her talents and gifts to build the Kingdom of God. Since all our talents and everything we have if a gift from God, disciples are expected to be unselfish in their generosity of time, talent, and treasure for the service of God by helping those in need.

What is Stewardship?

As part of our parish stewardship we are called to participate in the Stewardship of Time, Talent, and Treasure.  When people hear the word “stewardship,” they often immediately think of the financial aspect of it.  Christian Stewardship, though, is a balance of all three pillars; Time, Talent, and Treasure.

Stewardship of Treasure (money, physical gifts, and donations) is incredibly important to do the good works for which the St. Joseph family is known. We need to keep in mind that the other two pillars are equally important! Stewardship of Talent is our use of the gifts that God has given us. Whether inward gifts like the gifts of input, consistency, responsibility, and many others, or outward focused gifts, like organization, photography, woodworking, farming, etc., these talents help us to fulfill God’s will for us here on Earth.

Stewardship of Time is often the most confusing of the three pillars. People often believe it’s any amount of time you provide service or volunteer. It is actually the amount of time you are intentionally growing in communion with God through prayer and learning more about your faith.

Each month we will be creating a Stewardship Monthly Focus for you. In this guide will be many opportunities for you to grow in your Stewardship of Time, Talent, and Treasure. We DO NOT expect you to do all of them. Since we all are uniquely created, we, too, learn and serve uniquely as well. If you’ve never tried some of the options, we encourage you to try them and see if they fit your personal prayer needs.

Each month we will offer recommendations for each of the pillars of stewardship, for example, books, audio programs, novenas, indulgence opportunities, gifts needed in the community, and community events. Visit the parish website and/or subscribe to the parish-wide email to learn about these many methods of Stewardship each month.

How will you be a good steward of your gifts?
